Windows 7

Windows 7 is officially unsupported by Microsoft. Use at your own risk. That said, Microsoft Security Essentials still works, as well as PC Matic, which i haven't used, but has a lot of positive reviews.

Notes

Even though Microsoft no longer supports the OneDrive client for Windows 7, you can still connect to your OneDrive quite easily via WebDAV, which is a file sharing protocol that uses HTTPS.

  1. Copy the alphanumeric code after cid in the URL displayed in your browser's address bar.
  2. Open My Computer (or, open Windows Explorer and navigate to the Computer view).
  3. Click Map network drive in the toolbar at the top of the window.
  4. Click the link at the bottom of the dialog, which says “Connect to a Web site…”
  5. Click Next in the dialog that appears.
  6. Click Next again.
  7. In the box under Internet or network address, type https://docs.live.net/CID, where CID is the code copied in step 2.
  8. Click next, wait for the authentication prompt (it might take a moment), and use your Microsoft account email address and password to log in.

ISOs

Microsoft no longer officially offers any public sources for Windows 7 DVD images, but these links still work as of May 2022:

Unofficial downloads of Enterprise as of May 2022:

Additional ISOs are listed here.

Updates

There are some important update packages that may be required to get a new installation to a workable state (including the ability to find and download updates):

  • The Windows Management Framework (WMF) includes updates for PowerShellplugin-autotooltip__default plugin-autotooltip_bigPowerShell

PowerShell is Microsoft's interactive scripting engine, allowing you to create powerful scripts for many purposes. PowerShell can easily import and use any .NET library or type, making it very powerful for automation and sophisticated processing of dirty inputs, such as badly-formatted text.
(and the ISE), WinRM, and WMI. WMF requires .NET 4.5 (for v5).
  • The .NET Framework might fail to install on the first attempt; KB4019990 has an update available.
  • Old .NET Framework downloads are here, and the last .NET 4 build (4.8) can be downloaded directly here.

2019-09 Security Roll-Up

This update has two prereq packages, install these three packages in order:

Additional Updates

The following list of updates were required for my Dell E6410 after installing the Ultimate x64 image linked above. I've been slipstreaming every update into my Windows 7 install WIM, so my image stays fresh.

Install these in order, skipping any that are already installed:
